Newfoundland Canada

Moose
The species of moose found in Newfoundland is known as the Eastern Canadian Moose; on this island they are more plentiful than any other place in North America (100,000+) and yield an average antler spread in the 35-45 inch range. Mature bulls range from 1,100 – 1,200 pounds with some approaching the 1,400-pound range. Adult cows average approximately 800-900 pounds.

The Newfoundland and Labrador bow hunting season runs from the last Saturday in August until the end of December proceeding the rifle season by two weeks, which begins the second weekend in September. There are a limited number of moose licenses available per season, so book your hunt early.
Our guides use and instruct hunting techniques such as calling and spot and stalk hunting. The most common length of shots average about 100 to 200 yards, although it is not uncommon to see shots ranging from 250 to 300 yards. We hunt early morning, break for lunch and the majority of days we hunt until late evening.

Woodland Caribou
Our outfitter presents Woodland Caribou hunting at its best. Our professional and experienced guides will take you on the hunting trip of a lifetime with a 100% success rate.

Although Woodland Caribou exist in other areas; Newfoundland offers the only opportunity for a hunt. Woodland Caribou have very poor eyesight although they have an excellent sense of smell. By paying particular attention to the wind direction when stalking an animal, this can help the hunter to get a closer shot. Woodland Caribou often weigh in at an average of 400 pounds or more and yield antlers in the 30-40 inch range.

The Woodland Caribou-hunting season runs from mid-September to the last of December. To hunt Woodland Caribou you have to be prepared to walk, as they tend to roam throughout the day. The best time to hunt Woodland Caribou is during the Rut, as the mature dominant males will herd the does in open terrain providing a great opportunity for a trophy.

Our guides use spot and stalk hunting methods. The most common length of shots average about 100 to 200 yards, although it is not uncommon to see shots ranging from 250 to 300 yards. Hunting Woodland Caribou is an all-day event, as they remain active throughout the day.

Black Bear
Some of the largest black bears on Earth have been recorded in Newfoundland. These magnificent predators make for an interesting hunt. Approximately 10,000 of these mighty bruins roam the island. Black Bears are thought to have been isolated on Newfoundland for over 10,000 years allowing them to evolve into a distinct breed of super predatory bears. Plentiful food supplies, ideal habitat and light hunting pressure have allowed these bears to grow exceptionally large. Some biologists believe that Newfoundland’s Black Bears are actually a “magnum size” sub-species. Others believe the conditions have simply allowed maximum growth. In either case, there is an excellent opportunity to take home a trophy.
Bear hunters can use either rifle or bow for the hunt. Our sturdy tree stands are constructed above active baits. We use sweets and other tasty foods to attract the hungry bears, which keep bears frequently returning to the bait. Suggested shots using a rifle usually range from about 40-60 yards, while 15-20 yards is recommended for bow hunting. It is important to note that sows with cubs cannot be taken. One license can allow for the taking of two bears. However, there is an additional cost of $1000.00 for the second bear.

Combination
Our outfitter also offers a combination of two or more of the three big game animals available. The moose/Woodland Caribou and the Newfoundland Grand Slam hunt are priced at a ten-day hunt. The time of day will determine what species you will be hunting, in order to increase your success. For instance, moose are most active at dawn, Woodland Caribou are active all day and black bears are most active in the evening. Therefore, in a combination hunt you will hunt moose in the morning, Woodland Caribou at midday and black bear in the evening.

Atlantic Salmon
Experience the thrill and excitement of a fishing trip in one of Newfoundland’s greatest frontiers. The cold waters of Northern Newfoundland are excellent for the health of the Atlantic Salmon. These cold temperatures cause the salmon to be extremely lively and aggressive requiring an angler to be vigorous and alert.
We have three rivers located on the eastern side of northern Newfoundland, an area that remains unique with old-growth forest that blankets the coastal valleys.
Due to its remoteness, the Northern Peninsula has bountiful stocks of Atlantic salmon found throughout these exhilarating rivers. For many years, Newfoundland has been a well-kept secret when it came to fly fishermen knowing this is the best place to land Atlantic Salmon. Pound for pound, the Atlantic Salmon is one of the strongest fish in the water. Grilse are more commonly landed, these extremely lively fish jump four to five feet in the air when hooked.
The Fishing season annually opens from the beginning of June until mid-September. The best of the fishing is from the last week of June to the end of July.
